Invoices, contracts, payslips and customer details should never go into the bin in one piece. A paper shredder protects your business and your clients. But shredders vary a lot — here is how to choose.
1. Understand security levels (P-1 to P-7)
Shredders are rated under the DIN 66399 standard. The higher the number, the smaller the pieces.
| Level | Cut type | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| P-1 / P-2 | Strip-cut | General, non-sensitive paper |
| P-3 | Small strip / cross-cut | Internal documents |
| P-4 | Cross-cut | Most offices — invoices, HR and customer data |
| P-5 | Micro-cut | Confidential financial and legal documents |
| P-6 / P-7 | High-security micro-cut | Highly classified material |
For most UAE businesses, P-4 cross-cut is the right balance of security and speed.
2. Sheet capacity
This is how many sheets the machine shreds at once.
- 5–8 sheets — home office
- 10–15 sheets — small office
- 20+ sheets — busy departments
3. Duty cycle (run time)
Small shredders may run only a few minutes before cooling down. For shared office use, choose a model with a longer run time.
4. Bin size
Larger bins mean less emptying. 20–30 litres suits a small team; 30+ litres for shared use.
5. Extra features
- Shreds staples, paper clips and credit cards
- Anti-jam / auto-reverse
- Quiet operation for open offices
- Safety sensor
