A laminating machine protects documents from water, dust and wear. Offices use them for certificates and notices, schools for teaching materials, and restaurants for menus. Here is how to choose the right one.
1. Pick the size: A4 or A3
- A4 laminator — best for most offices. Handles certificates, ID cards, letters and small notices.
- A3 laminator — choose this if you laminate posters, menus, charts or large signs. It also handles A4 and smaller.
If you are unsure, an A3 machine gives you more flexibility for a small price difference.
2. Hot or cold lamination
- Hot lamination — uses heat to seal the pouch. Stronger, clearer finish. Most common for offices.
- Cold lamination — no heat. Safe for photos and heat-sensitive prints.
Many machines offer both settings.
3. Pouch thickness (microns)
- 80 micron — light, flexible; for notices and everyday documents.
- 125 micron — stiffer; for certificates and menus.
- 175–250 micron — very rigid; for ID cards and items handled daily.
Check the machine’s maximum pouch thickness before buying.
4. Warm-up time and speed
Light-use machines take 3–5 minutes to warm up. If your team laminates daily, choose a model with fast warm-up and higher speed.
5. Number of rollers
More rollers (4 or 6) give a smoother, bubble-free finish — important for menus and signage.
