A4 paper is the most-used item in almost every office. Choosing the right type saves money and prevents printer jams.
What does “gsm” mean?
GSM means grams per square metre — the weight and thickness of the paper. Higher gsm = thicker, stronger paper.
70gsm paper
- Lighter and thinner
- Lower cost per ream
- Good for internal drafts, forms and high-volume printing
- Slight show-through when printing on both sides
80gsm paper
- The office standard for most printers and copiers
- Feels more professional
- Less show-through for double-sided printing
- Fewer jams in high-speed copiers
Other paper types
| Type | Use |
|---|---|
| 90–120gsm | Letterheads, presentations, reports |
| 160–300gsm (card) | Covers, certificates, business cards |
| Colour paper | Notices, forms, school use |
| A3 paper | Drawings, charts, large prints |
Brightness and quality
Higher brightness gives sharper text and better colour prints. For client documents, choose premium bright white 80gsm.
How to prevent paper jams
- Store paper flat, in its wrapper, away from humidity and AC vents.
- Fan the stack before loading.
- Do not overfill the tray.
- Use the paper weight your printer recommends.
Which should you buy?
- Internal drafts, high volume: 70gsm
- Everyday office and client documents: 80gsm
- Presentations and letterheads: 100gsm+
